Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) is programming used for medical purposes without being tied to a specific medical device – that is, standalone software.

SaMD is slowly advancing through clinical trials and working toward broader use in everyday medical practice for things like determining the right dosage for individual patients, detecting a stroke by analyzing imaging, diagnosing autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in young children, etc.

An example of SaMD is the Canvas Dx, which uses software to analyze children's behavior and combine that information with adults' responses to questions about their behavior. This system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve highly accurate results in diagnosing ASD.
