Networks fill 85% of all jobs.

That's an insane statistic, but we know that networking as a healthcare professional is a little more difficult than for other careers.

On your end, you deal with patients on a daily basis, to the point where you have no time left for anything else. But even with all you have on your plate, there are still effective ways to grow your connections.

The main way to network is through social media.
Where else can you tap into a huge user base of professionals whenever you want? Every other option happens for a limited time during which you can plan your work week. Social media platforms are always available and waiting for you to use them as a means to grow your connections.

But there are simply too many different platforms. If you created an account for each, you wouldn't have time for anything else. Choose to use platforms that are more focused on interaction.

After you create a profile, you can contact people you already know and then send direct messages to people you don't know yet, indicating your interest in connecting with them.

The second network hack as a healthcare professional takes place through social media groups.

In 2020, Facebook released a Superbowl ad dedicated to showcasing all the different groups that exist on the platform. It wasn't a lie, because there are even Facebook groups for practicing healthcare professionals.

Look for groups that no one can join. Some of these require your NPI number before you join to verify your identity. Those are the types of groups you want to join. Once you're in, you can have regular conversations with other professionals in your industry.

Third, consider Locum Tenens' contracts.

The number of contracted physicians has actually doubled from approximately 26,000 in 2002 to 48,000 in 2016. Today, 94% of facilities admit to contracting these contracted physicians in the past year.
These provide you with a great networking opportunity.

You visit for a few days, treat patients and work with the staff available to the institution.

My fourth networking hack for you is to attend events when they come back.

Conferences and events remain one of the best ways to network.
If you worked in the corporate world and I told you that talking to conference attendees could get you 20% more customers, you would jump out of your seat with excitement and find the next person to attend as quickly as possible.
This is of course not that simple in healthcare.

Attendees at healthcare events also include other doctors and salespeople trying to get you to buy their products. Also known as a great opportunity to expand your connections.

Once you get there, introduce yourself to as many people as possible. Everyone is there for the same reason: they want to meet other experts in their industry. Also attend workshops and speaking events wherever you go. Choose the ones that interest you most so that you find like-minded individuals.

Don't be afraid to attend events that aren't related to your specialty. You are there to learn more about others in your industry. Expand your horizons and watch your connections grow.

My final networking hack for you is to join an association. Doctors and nurses top the list of the most respected professions in the world.

But what does that mean for you?

There are many associations you can join. These organizations exist solely for the purpose of providing a place where you can connect with others who work in the same profession.

Those in the group work within the same specialty as you, so have likely experienced similar scenarios in their work.

When some people hear the word "networking," they cringe. It involves putting yourself out there and introducing yourself to strangers.

It's not as difficult as it sounds, all you need is a little courage and know-how. Once you've defined your strategy, it's only a matter of time before your network of healthcare professionals charts a path to success.
