The first AMG version of the new generation Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV ditches the previous 3.0-liter V6 biturbo for a more powerful engine: the powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol from the A45 S hatch.

With outputs of 310 kW and 500 Nm (compared to 285 kW and 520 Nm in the final version of the previous GLC 43 V6), the new four-cylinder GLC 43 promises superior handling and improved fuel efficiency, coupled with an addictive ballistic and barking soundtrack. But does the new GLC 43 have enough powertrain personality to outdo its BMW X3 M40i straight-six rival? And does AMG's hi-po four-cylinder actually achieve better fuel economy?

Tom Baker of Chasing Cars conducts an in-depth review of the new generation GLC 43 and finds that it drives better than ever, sounds great and is perhaps preferable to the plug-in GLC 63 AMG flagship.
