The New Investigator Research Grant (NIRG) is intended for #researchers who are capable of becoming an independent principal investigator and who are now ready to take the next step towards that goal. You can apply in all areas that fall under the jurisdiction of the MRC. All successful new research grant holders are eligible to register for the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) #mentoring program.
Applicants are expected to combine time spent at NIRG with a portfolio of other activities, such as time spent on other research grants or clinical duties, teaching, administrative duties, or other time spent on faculty (this list is not exhaustive ). As such, applicants are normally expected to apply for up to, but not more than, 50% of their contractual working time for the NIRG.
A NIRG normally has a term of three years and cannot be extended. Exceptionally, applications may be accepted for a longer period if the arguments supporting the transition to independence and scientific substantiation are sufficiently justified. NIRGs normally last no less than three years, as a shorter period is unlikely to fully achieve the transition to independence.
