Just 60 miles from New York City, the Sunken Forest is slowly disappearing, but not for the reasons you might think. Located on the skinny barrier island known as Fire Island, this old-growth maritime American holly forest is one of only two in the world. Jessica Hester, author of Atlas Obscura, dons a drawing suit to get up close and personal with the elements of destruction contributing to the demise of this unique ecosystem.
