The rapala x rap is one of the most durable jerkbaits on the market for peacock bass fishing. Peas are notorious for destroying lures, and many of the jerkbaits on the market are made of balsa, which, if you can imagine, isn’t very strong. The x rap takes a beating and keeps on ticking.

River 2 Sea whopper plopper is a great bait. It is especially good for beginning anglers, or someone who has never used a topwater before. All you have to do is cast and retrieve. It helps to cast around heavy cover, current seams and any shallow flats or sea walls where the peacocks usually prowl.

Hair jigs are such a versatile bait. They work well for bed fish, but also as a search bait. You wouldn’t think a peacock would chase a jig that is swum back to the boat, but they can jump out of their skin to eat one. They don’t have a lot of action, but the slight movement of the hair mimics the profile of a baitfish swimming feverishly away.

The jumping minnow needs no introduction. Rebel came up with this lure years ago and it is a staple in the tackle boxes of all experienced anglers. It can walk the dog and also dive slightly when you increase your retrieve speed. It looks just like a minnow running for its life.

Prop baits have been used to catch peacocks in the Amazon for years. The peacock bass we have in Florida don’t grow very large, so there’s no need for a giant woodcutter. Yozuri’s 3DB prop fits the bill perfectly. It has great coloration and a vibrant pattern that reflects light in a very unique way. However, it’s the sound of the prop that really excites the peacocks. Whatever feeding instincts Amazonian fishermen discovered with choppers, that’s exactly what the 3DB prop brings out in Florida’s peacock bass.

Lipless crankbaits are another great lure to find and catch fish if you are a beginner. Similar to the whopper plopper, you cast and reel it in. Depending on the depth of the water, you can wait a few seconds before reeling it in to fish deeper. The speed of your retrieve also determines how deep the bait will go. Other great lipless crankbaits to use are those from livetarget, the original Rat-L-Trap, and the Googan squad clutch.

Mike Bucca's Baby Bull Shad is a miniature version of the best multi-jointed swimbaits ever made. The Baby Bull Shad was the missing link to catching all the other fish that swim instead of just giant largemouth. It is the perfect size for peacocks. Mike even commented on my video of me throwing the bait under docks for peacocks. He was researching how to target them on the Ida/Osbourne chain of lakes and saw me hit them on his bait. Needless to say, they work and are a blast to fish.
