Hiking, backpacking, and mountain trips can cover a lot of ground, and the longer the trip, the more likely unforeseen circumstances will arise that force us to adapt. In those circumstances, going through the process of creating my own topographic road map helps me better understand the options and recognize landmarks once I'm in the field.
