Is a boat GPS necessary? Having GPS on a boat is only really mandatory for using autopilot functions. Other than that, you may not absolutely NEED it, but it is a fantastic tool for better fishing and general safety.
Here are seven of Garrett's top reasons to invest in a boat GPS:
1. You can follow the gate from which you started to make it easier to find your way back
2. Track lines let you see where you've been so you don't unnecessarily fish the same spots
3. GPS allows you to see your boat's position in the water. And if your GPS has an anchor alarm function, you can see if your anchor is slipping
4. You can track your speed and the general direction you are going
5. You can see underwater obstacles and navigation marks
6. It is a great tool for route planning
7. You can set a waypoint, which is ideal for returning to your favorite fishing spots, or to mark the location of a man-overboard situation, to assist search and rescue teams
