All drivers must know and understand the hand signals used to perform various actions such as changing lanes or stopping. You may also need to demonstrate the three basic hand gestures during your driving test.

In this video we discuss the hand signals for turning left, the hand signals for turning right and the hand signals for slowing down or stopping.

Although driving hand gestures are rarely used, it is important that you know how to identify them and how to perform them yourself.

The right turn signal is indicated by extending your arm upwards at a 90 angle with your palm facing forward.
The left turn signal is indicated by an arm sticking straight out through the window.
You can signal that you are slowing down or stopping by extending your arm down with your palm facing back

In general, using hand signals is a short-term solution that should only be used to transport your vehicle to a place where the problem can be resolved or to address an immediate situation. Do not rely on hand signals for extended periods of time as the risk of an accident is much higher than normal.
