To meet medical equipment needs, many hospitals in low-income countries rely on donated equipment. However, research has shown that almost 40% of donated medical equipment arrives in the country unstable, and more than 95% is unusable after five years. In addition, hospitals in developing countries face major challenges in accessing skilled technicians who can install, maintain or repair medical equipment. As a result, equipment essential for diagnosing diseases, sterilizing tools and performing surgeries quickly falls out of use. EWH was founded in 2011 to help address this challenge. On October 13, 2021, EWH's Institute Manager, Megan Lavery, moderated a discussion on maintaining medical equipment in low-resource settings and EWH's work to improve healthcare around the world.
