What is a CDN?

CDN stands for Content Delivery Network and is a group of servers spread across different locations. This network provides several points of presence outside the origin server, allowing websites to better manage their traffic by serving user requests faster and providing a better user experience.

What is an Origin server?

An origin server is a computer that hosts your original web files. Without a CDN, visitors must request and receive information directly from your site's server. The greater the distance between the end user and an origin server, the longer the user will have to wait for the page to load.

What is a CDN Edge server?

An edge server is a computer that can cache content retrieved from an origin server. They are located in physical data centers located all over the world – the Points of Presence. Users can retrieve data from a physically closer CDN edge server, which is especially useful if your website experiences a sudden spike in traffic.

How does a CDN work?

When a user requests access to your website, your CDN retrieves data from the origin server. Then the CDN copies this data and places it on the nearest edge server. This data is cached and reused for future requests.

Using a CDN can benefit your website by:

Reduce bandwidth consumption.
Improving website performance.
Strengthening security.
