What is intellectual property?
Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; to design; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. IP is legally protected by, for example, patents, copyrights and trademarks, allowing people to gain recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the broader public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish.

As designers, it is our fundamental responsibility to create innovative solutions to problems and opportunities. The output is often powerful, provocative and in some cases valuable. Lloyd Dakin discusses with industrial design students issues related to patents, utility patents and copyright laws, on everything from fashion, products, sculpture and more.
