Given the current situation surrounding YouTube and Twitter's poor treatment of LGBT creators, decentralized social networks are becoming increasingly important as an alternative that can ultimately take some power away from companies.

After two years of existence, Mastodon presents both a viable alternative to Twitter for those who choose to participate in political discourse, and a safe space/refuge for those who need it.

The platform may not be perfect (although my own experience has been very positive), but it at least represents an important step in the right direction.

There are of course more decentralized alternatives than just Mastodon – others similar to Twitter, but also alternatives to Facebook and YouTube. Peertube, YouTube's alternative, is still in its early stages and has many rough edges, but has potential if it gains more input and traction.

If decentralization becomes more common there will be many issues that we will have to work around, but because it provides a more ethical platform than the ones currently available to us, I think it is worth investing energy in these platforms and to see where that leads.
