In this video, expert Cal Evans shows what Object Caching is, why it makes your site faster, and how to implement it in WordPress.

There are a few different ways you can make your site faster. One of the most effective ways is caching your site.

Object caching is a technique used to collect the results of expensive procedures. When a process, such as talking to the database to get a list of available messages, takes a long time to run, we can save the results of that process and next time we just use the saved results instead of running the process again to feed.

Storing the results is what we mean by 'caching' and it helps you speed up your site because the fewer times you have to perform expensive procedures, the faster your site will run.

There are many things that can benefit from object caching. Anything that takes a while to run and returns data that can be stored for a period of time is a candidate for object caching, such as:

Queries to various APIs
Database queries

Memcached is currently the most used service to implement object caching and is well supported by both WordPress plugins and hosts.

At SiteGround, not only have we automatically set up a Memcached server for you, but you can also use our free Speed Optimizer plugin to deploy it to your WordPress site with one click.
