When it comes to applying for the FAFSA, the sooner you apply, the better. If you apply early, you have a better chance of receiving the highest amount of aid you qualify for.

According to Dorothy Gilliard, the best time to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is on or around October 1 of each year, which is when the FAFSA for the following academic year becomes available. Although individual colleges have very specific deadlines for when the FAFSA is due, it is imperative that if you are applying for federal financial aid for the first time, you try to get that application in on or shortly after October 1.

You need to do this so that you can qualify for all types of federal financial aid and whatever it is you are considered eligible for. The deadline to file the FAFSA is June 30 each year. Because some federal student aid programs have limited resources, it is advisable to file for the FAFSA as soon as possible. Additionally, many states and colleges provide aid on a first-come, first-served basis, which is another reason to get your FAFSA filed early.
