Spain is once again following in Portugal’s footsteps by CANCELLING its Real Estate Golden Visa. Why? A golden visa is essentially a way for wealthy individuals to purchase residency or citizenship in a country – often without having to live there, or with minimal requirements such as a few days per year.

The Spanish Golden Visa is the same – a residency by investment program that allows non-EU citizens to obtain residency in Spain by making an investment in the country. More than 15,000 Golden Visas have been issued so far, 94% of which have been in the housing category, making housing more expensive for local residents who protest. The Spanish Prime Minister said his government wanted to make housing “a right, not a speculative business.” But is that possible in today’s economy?
