After a wind farm was set up on a hilltop next to Kharpud, a village in Maharashtra, farmers report annual flooding and erosion during the monsoons. The rainwater flowing from the hilltop into the Western Ghats brings mud and debris, affecting their crops and livelihoods.
Ecologists and activists say this case study highlights the need to implement stringent Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) before approving any project, including those for renewable energy, especially near areas of rich biodiversity.
