(116) Patents are indispensable tools for companies and a must in today's business environment. They can provide many benefits that can protect your interests now and in the future. But what is a patent? Simply put, a patent is a government grant that can prevent others from making, using, or selling your new, useful, and non-obvious invention for a specified period of time. How can having patents benefit your business? In this video I discuss how patents protect your research and development progress and talk about periodic product design reviews; detail how patents prevent competitors from taking your products and undercutting your prices, including an example using one of the world's largest retailers, Amazon, to provide a concrete illustration of how patents can help inventors and their companies; and finally, I discuss how patents can serve as a defense in lawsuits against competitors if your company is facing allegations of patent infringement and the approach to having a strong patent portfolio and robust patent strategy. You took the risk and put a lot of time, effort and money into designing a unique new product. Patents are one way to ensure that you can enjoy your success and protect yourself in the marketplace.
