This video was created by Steve Nagy and Chris Cherry along with guest member Madeline D, with the aim of demonstrating how cold or warm wall temperatures affect the thermostat's temperature readings. In general, digital thermostats and smart thermostats are considered more accurate than the old analog ones. However, they can still be off by up to 4F, as shown in this video. Thermostats we used for this demonstration; Honeywell thermostat, Pro 1 thermostat, Emerson thermostat, Ecobee smart Termostat, Sensi smart thermostat, Google Nest thermostat, Google Nest Learning smart thermostat and Lennox Smart communicating thermostat.
Perhaps one thermostat was more accurate than another at room temperature, but others performed better when it came to cold or warm wall temperatures.
Whether in cooling or heating mode, if the wall temperature affects the measurements it can result in higher energy consumption of the HVAC system. Colder or warmer wall temperatures can occur for many reasons and HVAC companies deal with this problem regularly. We have developed and adapted the method of making gaskets from cling film for homeowners. If one is more convenient, the foam injection method is recommended, but strictly follow the instructions and do not inject more than 1/3 can of expanding foam, especially into 2×4 walls. Emerson, Pro, Honeywell, Ecobee, Sensi, Nest, and Lennox did not provide us with any free products or compensate us for this review.
