All exposed metal parts in the data center, telecommunications room (TR) and equipment rooms (ER) must be bonded, including cabinets, racks, patch panels, cable shields, cable runs and equipment connection conductors as specified by BICSI & TIA. Wired believes that if you are going to invest in a data network, you have to do it right. Good grounding is a very important part of any data network.

The two purposes of the grounding system are to equalize electrical voltages and create a low-resistance path to ground. When designing a grounding system, five basic principles are used to achieve these goals:
1. The grounding system must be intentional.
2. The earthing system must be visually verifiable.
3. The earthing system must be sufficiently dimensioned.
4. The grounding system must conduct harmful currents away from the equipment.
5. All metal components in the data center must be connected to the grounding system.
