But what exactly are they?

Zoho describes workflow rules as a set of actions (alerts, tasks, and field updates) that are executed when certain specified conditions are met.

This allows you to automate any process within the functional boundaries of your software.

To ensure that each rule works efficiently, it should consist of the following:

Basic data describing the rule.

The rule trigger, or the thing that initiates an action.

Rule criteria that are captured as 'if/then' statements.

Immediate actions, or the alerts or updates that follow when a rule is triggered.

And finally, time-based actions. They are not always needed, but they help organize alerts and updates to a schedule.
